Texas Highways features Moonlight Tour at Cypress Valley
Texas Highways feature April 2014 by Melissa Gaskill
“From a sheltered platform more than 40 feet high, I step out into darkness, my heart beating a little faster than usual. The zipline cable from which I hang hums as I gather speed, cool air rushing past my face.”
What might you see while zipping along this course in Texas Hill Country? In Cypress Valley, butterflies like the Pipevine Swallowtail flit around, while birds floating past could include the Carolina Chickadee, Belted Kingfisher (they have pretty fun hairdos) and Yellow-Billed Cuckoo. And you would have to be a little cuckoo not to take advantage of this beautiful course, which offers occasional night tours for an extra thrill. Pack a picnic and jump in the small lake afterward for a refreshing swim.
Famous for being the first canopy tour in the continental United States, Cypress Valley Canopy Tours of Spicewood, TX recently completed the Lofthaven II tree house for overnight lodging — taking outdoor adventure to a new level of luxury. This new tree house – built in partnership with ArtisTree — goes above and beyond the original Lofthaven featured on the front-page travel sections of publications like the New York Times and Dallas Morning News. Cypress Valley’s Lofthaven II includes a beautiful ancient cypress tree growing through the middle of the tree house and a rock grotto waterfall filling a hot tub in the private bathhouse.

“Clear!” shouts guide Cedric Knudsen from across a grove of Cypress trees. Five other adventurers in my group already have made that first leap onto the zip line. Now, it’s my turn. I sit back in the harness and step off the platform, forcing myself not to look down at the 30-foot chasm between my feet and the ground. There’s no time to dwell on the precariousness of my lofty perch as I swiftly whiz through the air. I let out a few laughs while enjoying the view and then, all too quickly, I’m slowing down for landing.

Zipline through the forest
Ziplining was once the domain of tropical places like Costa Rica and Hawaii, but Central Texas now has its very own course where visitors can fly through the treetops on a steel wire. In fact, Cypress Valley Canopy Tours in Spicewood boasts the first canopy zipline to be established in the continental United States. It covers about a half mile of platforms through old-growth cypress trees on property that was once part of the Paleface Ranch.
